We are to exhort one another to maintain good works until the Lord returns. If we are not careful to mainltain good works the only other option is evil works of which the scripture says to avoid at all cost.
Jesus said that if your eye offend thee pluck it out for it is better to enter into the kingdom of God blind than to go into eternal darkness with sight. Note the following scriptures that exhort believers to maintain good works. Titus 3:8 states, “This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are profitable unto men.”
Verse 14 states, “And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.”Roman 2:28 tells us that in time past God gave people over to a reprobate mind to do those things which are not convenient because they did not like to retain God in their knowledge.
Hosea 4:6 states a quote from God saying, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shall be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.”
Romans 8:6-7, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.”
Galatians 6:7-8 states, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life and peace.”
If we sow into ourselves we will reap from ourselves but if we sow into God through His spirit, we will reap from God through His Spirit.
Hebrews 10:23-31 states, Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised) and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another, and so much to more, as we see the day approaching. For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: of how much sore punishment, suppose ye shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Notice Psalm 95: 6-11,”O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.”
In the book of Hebrews, the writer quotes this passage of scripture taken from the 95th Psalm and goes on to say: “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called to-day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceifulness of sin.
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To-day if ye will hear his voice, hearden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that sinned, that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” (Note Exodus 32:25-29)
The Apostle Paul also exhorts the church, using the day of provacation and temptation in the wilderness as examples, to stay true to Christ unto the end.I Corinthians 10: 1-13, Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptised unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and did all eat the same spiritual meat; and did all drink the same spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Now these things were our examples to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in on day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us temp Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed bo the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”
